Grand Royal #2

In this multi-media world in which we live style is everything. If Grand Royal magazine contributed nothing else to society during its six issue life-span, it set the stage for a journalistic style that is now used in all popular magazines. Prior to Grand Royal, newsstands carried very few magazines which catered to popular culture. Unless you subscribed to handfuls of independent zines, your view of trends in clothing, music, and world politics were boring and separated with annoying fragrance advertisements. Grand Royal magazine changed all of that. With input coming directly from the Beastie Boys every page seemed to drip with coolness. Regardless of topic, a reader finds oneself enjoying every last article. One can repeatedly read through Grand Royal Issue #2 and garner something new that they may have missed previously. Looking back to the early 1990s when the first few issues were printed, it is mind blowing to reflect on just how dense each issue really was.

Publications like FHM, Maxim, and Stuff have successfully copied certain journalistic aspects of Grand Royal Magazine and combined those elements with photos of scantily clad women, and have gone on to sell large numbers of subscriptions. Sadly Grand Royal magazine never offered subscriptions (or photos of scantily clad women) and instead forced fans to hunt for its bound copies. To this day, issues still command healthy bids on online auction sites and thus live on through new readers. Maybe, in the future, Grand Royal Magazine will be resurrected from the dead, but until then dig out those old issues and read them all over again as your mp3s play in the background.
